May 30 sneakers! Final Project
Let's begin by reading this article and taking the quiz together. Hip Hop Culture and the Elements of Sneaker Design
Project Details
1. As you research, collect and post 10 or more images on your blog. They should all be about a certain theme and should relate to one another. *They must be school appropriate.
2. Check your theme with Mrs. Kubu. *You need to be able to answer two questions:
1. Who is the audience for this sneaker design?
2. What is the message you are conveying?
3. Once okayed, you will need to find a sneaker template online or create your own. You can research "How to Draw a Sneaker" or "Sneaker Template". Make sure you consider shape of the sneaker. It's time to sketch out your ideas.
*You need to create a design for the front, the back and both sides of the sneaker. You also can consider the inside of the sneaker, but it isn't required.
*Your design must not be copyrighted! AND if you have a saying/quote/lyric/etc you must site your sources!
*You need to use the Gestalt design principles to make sure your theme is communicated clearly.
*You are to create 5 thumbnail designs. You may do so by drawing with pen, pencil or other materials or even cutting out printed materials/magazines/etc.
*Check your 5 thumbnail designs with Mrs. Kubu. *You need to be able to answer:
1. Is your message communicated clearly?
2. If not, what can be improved and how?
4. Once your sneaker design is okayed, you may begin the rough. You have the artistic freedom to design it by hand or by computer program of your choosing (there are many tutorials online-check them out!) .
No matter which you choose, it needs to look professional and finalized.
5. Check your rough with Mrs. Kubu. You will then receive tag board to build a model of your sneaker. Using scissors/tape/glue/etc. you are to build your LIFE SIZEsneaker out of the tag board and apply your design to it using colored pencil/marker/printed paper/etc.
Your model needs to look clean, professional and finalized.
Turn in your thumbnail sketches, your rough and your model of your sneaker to be graded.
This project is due by end of class Wednesday June 7th! Late work will NOT be accepted.

march 1 Gestalt Part 3 of 3-compositional space
The successful use of compositional space is a key challenge for graphic designers working on page, package or website designs. The Gestalt principles are a key way graphic designers manage visual elements and arrange them in pleasing, exciting, or useful ways for the viewer. The careful use of these principles-and creating many versions of a design before committing to a finished piece-helps the designer to create work that seems thoughtful and intentional, as opposed to sloppy or accidental.
Objective:
To analyze examples of design found in the world by breaking down those designs into their basic forms and Gestalt relationships in the compositional space, and describe how the design successfully makes use of those principles.
Process:
1. Find an example of design (I have magazines for your use).
2. Make a quick sketch of your design blocking in the specific visual elements and spatial relationships. Keep this sketch loose using squares/circles/lines and/or shading in areas. Keep it proportional to the original. (see example below)
3. Analyze the design and label and number all the Gestalt principles and visual elements you see.
4. List and write a description of each of the labeled and numbered Gestalt principles. Explain how it added to the success of the design. (see example below)
5. Staple your design to your sketch/analysis and your explanation.
6. Turn in to me.

1. Finish uploading your points, lines and planes photos and type your short reflection. Make sure you publish your post.
2. on·o·mat·o·poe·ia
ˌänəˌmadəˈpēə,ˌänəˌmädəˈpēə/
noun: the formation of a word from a sound associated with what is named (e.g., cuckoo, sizzle ).
3. Similar to how onomatopoeias work, we are going to be drawing words using points, lines and planes. The word needs to be designed based on it's meaning. Complete 3 word drawings (one word using points, one word using lines and one word using planes) and turn them into me with your name.

feb 21 points, lines and planes
Download the file below and read the introduction to our new unit (you may print this if you want to annotate/highlight).
Your assignment:
By becoming sensitive to these fundamental visual elements (point, line and planes) in your surroundings, you will be better able to apply them to your graphic designs.
Objective: To identify points, lines and planes in the environment and to create visual records of those elements.
Process: With a partner, explore your environment (the classroom, your backpacks/purses, etc). Find examples of points, lines and planes. Use a phone camera to take a photo of your examples or sketch your examples on a blank sheet of paper. After creating multiple images (think of them as thumbnails), select your very best example of point, your very best example of line and your very best example of plane (think of these as your comps). Upload these 3 images to your blog. Type a brief summary about finding your images, the decision making process and describe why you think each image is successful.
